“Here is my latest weekly update as we continue to respond to the challenges presented by Coronavirus.

Today is VE day. 75 years ago, allied forces triumphed over the evils of Hitler and fascism in Europe. Back then, we overcame a seemingly insurmountable foe and flourished in the following years. A Labour Government rebuilt Britain by creating the National Health Service and a social security system that was fit for the heroes that returned from the battlefields of Europe.

Now, we once again face an unprecedented threat that has changed the way we live. As it was back then, it will be again. That now we will come back from this stronger than before. We will rebuild a better Britain in the wake of Coronavirus that values our key workers and ensures everyone has a ‘right to work’ and a right to a secure livelihood.

My other updates this week:

Continuing the support given to our local Care Homes
Coordinating the Birmingham MPs and City Council to urge the Government not to end the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme prematurely
Thanking ASDA for listening to my calls for better support to be given to care homes by supermarkets
Calling on the Government to support Birmingham City Council who are facing a funding gap of over £100 million created by the Coronavirus crisis”
