The Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, has today announced that the Government will pay 80% of employee’s wages if they would have otherwise been made unemployed due to Coronavirus.

Today’s announcement comes after cross-party calls, led by Jack Dromey and Greg Clark, for the Government to step in to protect jobs and businesses.

Full details of the scheme are set to be announced in the coming days.

Reacting to the announcement, Jack Dromey MP said:

“I welcome the announcement by the Chancellor today to pay 80% of worker’s wages during the ongoing Coronavirus outbreak. Greg Clark and I have worked for weeks alongside Trade Unions and Employers Organisations. We built cross party support and I’m pleased the Government has responded by taking the action they have which will save tens of thousands of jobs

“I still have questions over the provisions available for those on zero-hours contracts and the support that is available for those who are self-employed. I will continue to make representations to the Government on these issues over the coming days and weeks.”
