Today, Jack called on the Government to better protect shop workers across the country, after hearing harrowing accounts of the assaults they have suffered while working in shops.

Speaking in Parliament, Jack vowed to work closely with the trade union USDAW to ensure that appropriate action is taken to strengthen legislation in relation to the protection of shop workers, including tougher, simpler sentencing guidelines.

Jack Dromey MP said:

“I passionately believe we need better protections for shop workers across the country. I have heard first hand harrowing accounts of the assaults they have suffered while working in shops. These have included attacks with shotguns, medieval maces, and one man who was assaulted so seriously that he died three times before paramedics managed to stabilise him.

“The government must take action. We need tougher, simpler sentences that send an unmistakable message that if you assault a shop worker, then you will pay the price, including with your liberty. I will be working closely with the Shopworkers Union, USDAW, to ensure the government is held to account on this issue.”
